For those who want a deep dive into Morocco's most cultural face, this circuit travels the country from north to south adding the magic of the Rif and the Andalusian heritage of the former Spanish Protectorate.

Eight days between the Strait of Gibraltar, the blue villages of the Rif, the Roman mosaics of Volubilis, the four imperial capitals and the buzz of Jemaa el-Fna.

Morning arrival in Tangier (time difference depending on the season). After passport control and luggage pickup we meet the driver who will accompany the group throughout the route. We start with Cape Spartel, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea, followed by the famous Caves of Hercules. We then continue to Tetouan, known as «the White Dove» for the predominant colour of its houses and its luminous light. Guided visit to the Tetouan medina — a UNESCO World Heritage site that still keeps a strong Andalusian influence inherited from the Spanish Protectorate era. Dinner and overnight in a medina riad or 4★ hotel. Note: depending on the flight schedule, the Tetouan tour may be moved to the following morning.

Day 02

Chefchaouen and the Rif mountains

Departure for Chefchaouen, set between the Tisouka and Megou mountains in the heart of the Rif range. On the way we stop at the Akchour Waterfalls to enjoy the landscape and take photos. We arrive in Chefchaouen, the famous «blue town», for a guided walk through its most emblematic alleys and squares: Uta el-Hammam square, the Grand Mosque, the 17th-century Kasbah and its gardens, Makhzen square, Bab el-Ansar and the Ras el-Maa fountain. Free time in the afternoon to explore at your own pace, stroll along the stream and discover the traditional Sebbanin laundry quarter. Dinner and overnight in a medina riad.

Chefchaouen · transfer to Rabat · guided tour

Early departure to Rabat — a morning dedicated to the transfer along the Atlantic coast, with shifting landscapes between the Rif and the ocean. Early afternoon guided tour of Rabat, the country's capital, with a local guide. We cover its most emblematic gems: the Kasbah des Oudaias — a beautifully preserved fortified neighbourhood built on a cliff overlooking the neighbouring city of Salé across the Bou Regreg —, Hassan Tower and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, and Chellah, an ancient Roman and medieval city reborn as a Merinid necropolis. Dinner and overnight in a 4★ hotel or riad in Rabat.

Day 04

Rabat · Volubilis · Moulay Idriss · Meknès · Fez

Early departure to Meknès. On the way we visit Volubilis, Morocco's largest Roman archaeological site — Caracalla's Triumphal Arch, the Capitol, the House of Bacchus and the spectacular in-situ mosaics make up this open-air treasure. We then pass through Moulay Idriss, holy city where the founder of Fez converted the local Berber population to Islam — its white houses cascading around the mausoleum make it one of the most spiritual sites in the country. We arrive in Meknès, one of Morocco's most beautiful and powerful imperial cities. Guided tour with a local guide. Its medina — smaller and quieter than Fez — holds enormous historical weight: founded by a Berber tribe in the 10th century, it became the country's capital in the 17th and is UNESCO listed. The city is wrapped in over 40 km of ramparts; the monumental Bab al Mansour stands out. We visit the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismaïl, the «Heri es Souani» granaries and royal stables, and the underground «Habs Qara» prison. Onwards to Fez (≈ 60 km). Dinner and overnight in a medina riad or 4★ hotel.

Fez · Morocco's cultural capital

Today we discover Fez el-Bali, the ancient medina of Fez — one of the most authentic and best-preserved in the Arab world. With a local guide we walk through medieval alleys packed with artisan workshops, mosques, palaces, Koranic schools and traditional souks. Fez is considered the country's most spiritual and cultural imperial city. The visit is entirely on foot — vehicles are forbidden in this UNESCO-listed medina. We also visit the traditional tanneries, panoramic viewpoints and several historic neighbourhoods organised around mosques, fountains, ovens and hammams. Dinner and overnight in a medina riad or 4★ hotel.

Fez · Middle Atlas · Marrakech

A long day across some of Morocco's most varied landscapes. We cross the Middle Atlas range towards Marrakech. Along the way we drive through Ifrane — known as «little Switzerland» —, the giant cedar forests home to Barbary macaques, Azrou, Khenifra, Berber Atlas villages and Beni Mellal. Arrival in Marrakech. Accommodation in a medina riad or 5★ hotel. The route can also be done by plane, or split into two days with an extra night at the Bin el Ouidane lake. We recommend visiting Jemaa el-Fna square at sunset, when it fills with storytellers, acrobats, snake charmers, street-food stalls, musicians and street artists — an unmissable experience. The driver service ends today.

Marrakech · medina, souks and Jemaa el-Fna

Morning guided walking tour of the Marrakech medina. We discover the Koutoubia, the Bahia Palace, the souks and artisan workshops, and a traditional Berber pharmacy. Along the way we see artisans working leather, carpets, ceramics and traditional babouches. Back to Jemaa el-Fna square and free afternoon to enjoy the city, bargain in the souks or get lost in the medina. The tour can be extended to include the Ben Youssef Madrasa, the Ben Youssef Museum, the Saadian Tombs and the Majorelle Gardens. Overnight in a medina riad or 5★ hotel.

Chefchaouen is a dream in a thousand shades of blue: alleys, steps and painted doors, cats asleep in the sun and the Rif mountains beyond. We climbed to the Spanish mosque at dusk and the whole town turned gold and blue.

Dear family,

We explored the medina of Fez and the ruins of Volubilis with a guide who seemed to know everything. We ate a homemade couscous a family cooked for us and ended up dancing at a wedding we were invited to by chance. How generous these people are!

For anyone seeking calm,

I got up early to see Chefchaouen empty and it was magical: just the sound of my steps through the blue streets and the smell of fresh bread. Some places look hand-painted. This is one of them.
