Eight days to discover Marrakech, the Atlas and the Sahara.

«Marrakech – Erg Chebbi – Marrakech» is a journey to discover the south of the country in depth. The route begins in Marrakech, a city full of colour, artisans, squares and unforgettable aromas.

From there the journey continues in a 4x4 across the High Atlas, discovering spectacular landscapes, Berber villages and impressive gorges. Further on we reach the Erg Chebbi desert, a magical place of endless dunes where we have the unique experience of sleeping under the stars.

The itinerary also crosses authentic places such as Rissani and its ancestral market, hidden oases and desert tracks, with two relaxing nights at Kasbah Xaluca before returning to Marrakech.

Day 02

Marrakech · medina, Koutoubia and souks

Guided walking tour of the Marrakech Medina with a local guide. We start at the Koutoubia minaret — twin of Seville's Giralda — and continue to the Bahia Palace. We wander the traditional souks watching carpet weavers, babouche makers and a vast range of artisans at work. Visit to a Berber pharmacy where they share their «little secrets». In the afternoon: free time, shopping, a Medina stroll and the art of bargaining. Overnight in a Riad in the Medina or 5* Hotel.

Koutoubia: the minaret that inspired the Giralda

Day 03

Pick-up at 09:30 from the agreed point in Marrakech and departure in a 4x4 with driver towards the Central High Atlas. A few kilometres lie ahead, generously rewarded by the landscape. We cross the Tizi n'Tichka — Morocco's highest tarmac mountain pass at 2,260 m — leaving the greens and ochres behind to enter a lunar landscape. Along the way we visit the Aït Ben Haddou Kasbah, UNESCO World Heritage and backdrop of countless film productions. We pass through Ouarzazate and continue along the Valley of the Roses to Boumalne Dades, at 1,612 m in the Valley of the Birds. Dinner and overnight at Hotel Xaluca Dades 4*.

Day 04

Central High Atlas · Dadès · Todra · Erfoud

This morning we head off-road into the heart of the Central High Atlas, discovering spectacular landscapes. We visit Berber villages such as Boutaghrar, where time seems to have stopped. We see mountains, canyons and valleys, as well as caves still inhabited by nomad families. We drive the Dadès Valley to its gorges and reach the viewpoint for tea, stopping at the «Monkey Paws». In the afternoon we continue to Tinerhir, a small and prosperous town of pink houses and palm groves — the ideal starting point to enter the famous Todra Gorges, where we walk along the riverbed. We then continue to Erfoud, known as «the Gate of the Desert». Dinner and overnight at Kasbah Xaluca, listed as unique in Morocco for its singular character.

The historic Dakar Rally tracks

Between Erfoud and the Erg Chebbi several tracks were used by the Dakar Rally during the Moroccan editions (until 2007). Many cross hamadas and dry wadis, making them iconic for 4x4 and adventure motorcycling.

The Erfoud and Merzouga marine fossil quarries date from the Devonian (approx. 360-380 million years ago), when the region lay under a shallow tropical sea.

Erg Chebbi

One of the two great ergs of the Moroccan desert, its dunes can reach 150 metres in height, shaped from extremely fine sand carried by Saharan winds. The tallest dune sits near Hassi Labied and is one of the most photographed spots in the desert.

Day 05

Full desert – Erg Chebbi & bivouac

A day of Total Desert. We drive one of the historic Dakar Rally tracks, visiting villages and desert nomads. Stop at the Marine Fossil Quarries — 360 million years old — and picnic in an authentic oasis. We continue to the great Erg Chebbi, the «desert of fine-sand dunes», where we swap the 4x4 for camels and ride into the heart of the dunes to witness an unforgettable sunset. We arrive on camelback at the Bivouac de Luxe and sleep in nomad-style jaimas. Dinner and overnight — spectacular under the stars.

Between Erfoud and the Erg Chebbi several tracks were used by the Dakar Rally during the Moroccan editions (until 2007). Many cross hamadas and dry wadis, making them iconic for 4x4 and adventure motorcycling. They are still used today for off-road training and competitions.

360-million-year-old fossils

The Erfoud and Merzouga marine fossil quarries date from the Devonian (approx. 360-380 million years ago), when the region lay under a shallow tropical sea. Ammonites, trilobites, goniatites and primitive fish all come from here — Morocco is one of the world's largest exporters of authentic Devonian fossils.

Erg Chebbi: dunes over 150 metres

One of the two great ergs of the Moroccan desert, its dunes can reach 150 metres in height, shaped from extremely fine sand carried by Saharan winds. The tallest dune sits near Hassi Labied and is one of the most photographed spots in the desert.

Day 06

Sunrise · Merdani · Khamlia · Rissani · Kasbah Xaluca

«A date with the Sunrise»: we recommend an early walk to the top of the dunes for sunrise. Bedouin breakfast and back to the vehicle for a drive around the Erg to the abandoned village of Merdani. We continue to Khamlia, a village of Sudanese origin, where its inhabitants offer traditional dances and mint tea. Later we head to Rissani's market — unique in these latitudes — where desert tribes and nomads stock up; the «donkey parking» is a sight worth photographing. We climb to a natural viewpoint for a final desert farewell. Arrival at Kasbah Xaluca for a free afternoon: heated pool, jacuzzi, tennis, minigolf, hammam, massage or — for the more adventurous — optional quad biking or a visit to nearby kasbahs. Dinner and overnight at Kasbah Xaluca.

Erfoud · Alnif · return to Marrakech

Day of return towards Marrakech via Alnif, desert landscapes of the Anti-Atlas and mountain stretches. A long transfer day (approximately 550 km), rewarded by the immense variety of landscapes. Final day with the 4x4. Arrival in Marrakech and free time — a good moment for a last dinner in the Medina or an evening stroll across Djemaa el-Fna. Overnight in a Riad in the Medina or 5* Hotel.
